what is hypnosis?

As long as there have been human beings, there has been hypnosis. We use this commonly occurring, natural state of mind unknowingly, very frequently. It is just natural for us. For example, if you have ever watched a television program or movie and become really absorbed into the program, you were probably in a trance. This trance is what has probably caused you to not hear someone calling you from the next room on many occasions.

In a sense, Madison Avenues understands this, using television programs to induce a trance in the viewer and then provide hypnotic suggestions, called commercials!

The point is this: hypnosis is a naturally-occurring state of mind. Everyone has already experienced hypnosis, by accident or by design. [ on hypnotherapy ]

It is very important, however, that we distinguish between simple hypnosis and useful hypnotherapy. Though these terms in general refer to a mental state that can be said to be the same, the connotations are really becoming quite different in the modern world of evolving medical treatment. The connotation of "hypnosis" is that of a parlor trick, where as the term "hypnotherapy" tends to suggest a beneficial treatment or therapy. [ more ]

Another common example of this naturally occurring state of mind is when you are driving down the road, with your mind focused on some other task (a daydream perhaps), and next thing you know, you have passed your next turn. Many refer to this as "highway hypnosis."

The U.S. government defines hypnosis as the bypass of the critical factor coupled with the establishment of acceptable selective thinking.

This is a useful and accurate definition of hypnosis. "Bypass of the critical factor" is just a fancy way of saying that limiting beliefs are being bypassed or released. For example, the use of hypnosis for anesthesia has been accepted by the American Medical Association since 1958. It is a well-established fact that hypnosis is useful for creating anesthesia. However, if one possesses the limiting belief that the mind cannot create a powerful anesthesia, it will be a self-fulfilling prophecy. However, in hypnosis, this limiting belief can be bypassed and hypnotic anesthesia can be induced. The second part of the government's definition, "the establishment of acceptable selective thinking", refers to the process of being guided into hypnosis by another. The establishment of selective thinking creates a favorable mental environment that facilitates the rejection of limiting beliefs so that new, more empowering beliefs can replace them. The hypnotic state is an optimal condition for successfully making life changes for this very reason.
